Low-Light Houseplants Perfect For Dark Rooms

Different houseplants have different needs when it comes to sunlight exposure. A houseplant that requires full sun will not thrive in a dark room, and conversely, a houseplant that needs lower light will not thrive in a sunny room. The following plants do very well in lower light conditions, and most do not require much maintenance at all, making them ideal for both beginners and people who are interested in growing beautiful plants without too much work.



1. Ivy

Ivy is a classic plant that looks striking in any space. This plant likes to climb and needs only some sunlight each day.


The English and Algerian varieties do particularly well in low light.


Moreover, English Ivy is a top air-purifying plant, according to NASA. It can remove toxins like benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene, and reduce particles of fecal matter and mold.






2. Snake Plant

Famous for its erect and sharp leaves, this slow-growing plant is a die-hard one.


Versatile and forgiving, the Snake Plant can tolerate both high and low light and needs water only every 2-6 weeks.


The snake plant is one of the top plants for cleaning the air from benzene, formaldehyde and other toxins.










3. Pothos

Pothos are low maintenance plants that can survive with low light and irregular watering and do not require a lot of fuss in order to thrive indoors.


Also known as Devil's ivy, this plant is able to absorb dangerous toxins like formaldehyde.


They can grow up to 10 feet, and will look amazing in hanging baskets or as climbing plants.









4. Maidenhair Fern

A lot of fern types do well in lower light; Maidenhair ferns do particularly well in low light and have a lush appearance that is perfect for adding green to any home.

















5. Philodendron

Philodendron is an iconic houseplant that does very well in medium to low light conditions.


They thrive without too much maintenance, making them a perfect beginner's option.














6. Calathea

Calathea plants require a bit more maintenance than the average houseplant.


They need to have a consistent amount of moisture to thrive, but they don't require sunny conditions, so they can thrive in low light.










7. Rex Begonia

If you are looking for beautiful indoor plants that don’t require a ton of maintenance, Rex Begonia is a great choice.


This plant is well known for its colorful leaves and unique appearance, which is one of the reasons why it's such a popular choice among plant owners.


Rex Begonia plants do well in both medium and low light.








8. Lucky Bamboo

Lucky bamboo is a unique looking plant that doesn't require much maintenance in order to grow and thrive.


It grows very well in medium and low light and, in case you don’t feel like setting up a pot or planter, it doesn’t require anything more than water to grow.













9. Peace Lily

Peace Lily is a popular flowering plant that blooms several times a year, even when it's grown in low light conditions.


It can also grow in medium light conditions, but if you have low light you don’t need to worry about growth being inhibited.













10. Spider Plant

Spider Plants are one of the most popular houseplants due to their unique appearance and low maintenance.


They can thrive in low light and indirect light, making them perfect for dark rooms.
